The match will throw in at 19:30 on Wednesday, 21st July in McHale Park, Mayo.

The home side, Mayo, had to beat reigning champions Galway on penalties to progress to the final. The game was decided through some excellent spot taking and a great save by the Mayo keeper.

Jack McMahon in Mayo’s corner forward position proved to be an important part of their win against Galway. He is a strong place kicker but also has a quick burst of pace in open play.

Roscommon needed to overcome a tough Sligo team to reach the final. It was a high scoring thrilling affair where a mounted Sligo comeback was not enough to break down Roscommon.

In that game, corner forward James Fitzgerald was the difference, scoring 2-02. He will need to be on form again for Roscommon to bring home the provisional championship.

These two faced each other in the 2018 final which Mayo easily came out on top of that time.

Predicted Starting 15

Mayo

Roscommon

Betting

Mayo have been given the advantage in this game with odds of 8/13 to win.

U20’s matches have a knack for taking games to extra time and the odds of another draw are 15/2.

Roscommon are underdogs but have a chance with odds of 13/8 to grab the title.

Predicted Score

Underage Connacht football has always been between Mayo and Galway. Now that Mayo has dispatched the Tribesmen, this is their competition to lose.

Roscommon are happy to be at the final after beating Sligo not too comfortable. Although this is an exciting young team, it is hard to see them overcoming Mayo.

Expect Mayo to lift the title with a seven point lead at the final whistle.

Cavan vs Roscommon can effect both ends of the Division 2 table. Before the lockdown, the division was chaotic and condensed. Last weekend, little changed. Roscommon need just a point to be crowned champions. But, a loss could see them drop out of the top two altogether. Meanwhile, Cavan need a win to guarantee safety from relegation.

Roscommon returned to action against Armagh in a top-of-the-table clash on Saturday. However, they were the slower to start and were wasteful in front of the posts. Whereas, Armagh were accurate and took their chances. It took an Enda Smith penalty in the 34th penalty to give the Connacht side a lifeline.

Then on 43 minutes, Smith scored another penalty. Two minutes later, Conor Daly netted after a super Conor Cox run.

Then, Roscommon finished strongly. But, Anthony Cunningham will be keen to improve across the pitch before the Championship commences.

Roscommon need just a point to guarantee their return to Division 1 as table-toppers. If they have to continue to rely on goals though, Cavan could spoil their party. They have had a player contract covid-19 and some of the squad will not travel so team news will be vital.

The Ulster side will be left wondering how they could score 0-20 and lose a game by four points. In truth, they were unlucky to not a goal of their own when Martin Reilly’s effort was saved. Mickey Graham will be encouraged by the strength with which his team finished.

By injury time, they were within three points of Kildare. If they can show the same fight for 70 minutes against Roscommon they could take the points.

If Cavan win, Armagh lose, and Westmeath draw with Kildare, Graham’s team could squeeze into the top 2. In what has already been an unpredictable Division, anything is possible.

Team News

What adds to the excitement for this one is that neither management team has any apparent absentees for it.

However, Cavan play just a week later in the Ulster Championship. They play Monaghan and defeat would immediately end their season. Therefore, Graham has to decide whether to risk injuring his first fifteen or saving them and giving others some game time.

Meanwhile, Roscommon aren’t out in the Championship until November 8th. As a result, Anthony Cunningham may not be afraid to use his big guns to secure the title.

Prediction: Roscommon. After winning Connacht in 2019, the Rossies will be ambitious and want to get back to Division 1. Their eye for goal has won them games and could do so again. But, Cavan will push them for the 70 minutes and Anthony Cunningham will need to plan accordingly.

Cavan vs Roscommon: Division 2, Saturday, October 24th, 2pm (Kingspan Breffni Park).

It will be a fiery return to inter-county action in Division 2 with Armagh vs Roscommon. As it stands, Armagh are on top of the Division. But, their Connacht opponents have an equal record and are only second due to points difference.

Allianz Football Division 2 round 6
Armagh v Roscommon, Athletic Grounds, 5.30pm – RTÉ2  Preview and live score updates

Before the lockdown, Armagh were on a run of form. For example, their last outing saw them register a 3-14 to 0-10 win away to Fermanagh. Similarly, Roscommon ended on a good note with a home win against Westmeath. Both sides have a draw on their record in the League. Armagh’s came in a high-scoring thriller against Westmeath. On the other hand, Roscommon and Laois had 2-14 a piece in the opener in January.

In spite of being joint-leaders, a loss for either team here would make it tough to secure a top-two finish. There are three teams within two points of them. Furthermore, both sides have away fixtures in round 7. Roscommon travel to Cavan while Armagh go to Clare.

After coming down from Division 1 last year, Roscommon are an ambitious coming-of-age team who will hope to return to the top tier. Meanwhile, Armagh have been competitive in the Championship in the last couple of seasons. Therefore, a strong League campaign will be a sign of intent from the Orchard County.

It is Armagh who have the more hectic return to action. Specifically, their final League game comes just a week prior to their Championship opener away to Derry. If they hit the ground running they can carry their form into the Ulster Championship.

In contrast, Roscommon have an extra week to prepare for their Connacht semi-final at home to either Leitrim/Mayo. The reigning Connacht Champions are keen to retain their crown in a straight knock-out Championship.

Allianz National League Division 2: Armagh vs Roscommon, Saturday October 17, 5.30 pm (Athletic Grounds).

Roscommon GAA have announced that senior hurling manager Ciaran Comerford has stepped down from his position.

The former Laois and Borris-Kilcotton player was appointed Roscommon boss in November 2017 and has been popular with supporters and players alike in the county. Ciaran was in the final year of the agreed deal, but has now decided that the time was right to move to pastures new rather than complete the season when action and inter-county training resume in September.

Chairman of the Roscommon County Hurling Board, Christy McDermott, said in a statement, “I’d like to thank Ciarán for his efforts over the past two and half years with the Roscommon team. I fully respect the decision he has made, as the Christy Ring Competition will not now commence until much later in the year”. Mr McDermott acknowledged all the work Comerford put into his role and said

“We had some good days including our winning of the Division 3 A National League last year. For those, we thank you Ciarán”.

Roscommon have said they hope to have a manager in place by the end of July. A recruitment process for the job will start in the coming days.
