Hopefully, very soon we will be allowed play some sports . So we have a list of some of the sports that you should be able to participate during the current pandemic of Covid 19  as long as people keep social distancing.

Tennis – Tennis is obviously a sport that can be played given that people are on the opposite sides of each other. You don’t need a tennis court to play either. It could be simply just across the street from your neighbour. You could play from one foothpath to the other. Obviously you would have to bear in mind cars and that but it could certainly be played in housing estates. Two girls in Italy played Tennis on their rooftops.

Golf – Golf can obviously be played while adhering to social distancing. The main people to keep the social distance would be the caddies and other players. However, it certainly would work. In terms of professional golf it would more difficult to control obviously owing to spectators. But for leisure it is a definite one that could be played.

Croquet – Croquet is a game that could be played in your back garden. For those of you that don’t know what croquet is it is a game that involves hitting wooden or plastic balls with a mallet through hoops. It is a game that can easily be played in your back garden.

Bowls – Bowls is another game that could be played in your back garden in an adapted way. The objective is to roll biased balls close to a smaller ball called the jack.

Swimming – Swimming can obviously take place. Your local beach would be handy obviously for this. However, most beaches have been closed. However, if they are monitored closely with strict social distancing in place then it would obviously work.

Windsurfing – Windsurfing is another sport that could be done during Covid 19. It is normally only a one person thing so social distancing would be easily adhered to. Windsurfing combines surfing and sailing. Its looks like the perfect sport for after covid, with social distancing not being an issue, have a look at Globo Surf for more info on the best places to surf.

Mountain Biking – Mountain biking is again a single person sport. Of course you can go with your family providing they have their own bikes. Keeping the 2m apart would be fairly easy to do also.

Rowing – Rowing is another water based sport that could be done. Again all you need is your local river and a boat and some oars. It can be done in pairs providing the 2m distance in the boat is adhered to.

Similar water based sports like kayaking, canoeing and paddle boarding could also be played as long as social distancing measure are in place.

With not a lot of sport on at present sports fans are coming up with ways to bring the atmosphere of a sports stadium to their couches. They use virtual technology to help with this.

Tech Mahindra is the company behind this new development. They are a leading provider of digital transformation, consulting and business re engineering services. In fact, they have now teamed up with a Canadian company called ChampTrax Technologies. This is to provide a solution to create stadium like atmosphere at home for sports fans worldwide.

The Stadiumbusines.com report that both companies will work on 5G related use cases and for holographic fans. Tech Mahindra will also support wider markets such as ChampTrax’s HearmeCheer which allows crowd noise for spectators at home in real time. Chief Strategy Officer of Tech Mahindra, Jagdish Mitra said, “We have been specifically focused on technologies that will enable experiences in the ‘during COVID’ and ‘after COVID’ world. Sports with a live fan experience is something that we will miss now for a while”. Elias Andersen who is the founder of ChampTrax technologies said “they are excited to partner with Tech Mahindra”.

HearmeCheer works in three steps according to the website hearmecheer.com. Firstly, as the spectator/fan watches from his her couch a game the web app should be open. This would automatically send microphone data to the server which in turn aggregates all sounds to create an audio stream. Step 2 is where all audio is combined. This is done through proprietary algorithms  which weight each household and allows users to yell as loud as they wish and not overpower the audio stream. Finally, the audio integrates real time broadcasts. Low latency algorithms are then used to maintain full integrity. This will provide full sound effects even if there are no fans present at games.

With the majority of sports activity still currently suspended due to the coronavirus there is not much live sport on. Check out my 5 sports matches to watch this weekend.

World Cup Gold – Friday, TG4, 7.30pm – World Cup Gold on TG4 will bring us to the 1986 soccer world cup in Mexico. France played Brazil in the quarter-final in what is certainly one of greatest games in history. The likes of players on show include Michel Platini and Zico. Cracker of a game !

Cluichi Na Bliana – Saturday, TG4, 11.05am – Monaghan take on Kerry  super 8’s. The game takes place at Clones. It was a cracking game with players like David Clifford, Sean O’Shea and Paul Murphy on show for the Kingdom. Monaghan with the likes of McManus, Rory Beggan and Karl O’Connell.

Rugbai Gold – Saturday, TG4, 7.15pm – Rugbai Gold will show the meeting between Connacht and Toulouse at the Stade Ernest Wallon from the 2012 Heineken Cup. It was a big game, considering Toulouse were unbeaten at home in the tournament for five years. Connacht were looking for an upset? Did they do it?

All-Ireland Gold – Sunday, TG4, 1.55pm – The first game on Sunday is the U21 All-Ireland Hurling semi-final between Galway and Clare from 2009. Extra time was required in this game. Could Joe Canning steer his side to victory?

All-Ireland Gold – Sunday, TG4, 3.40pm – Ah the perfect way to top off your weekend. The 2005 All-Ireland Football Final between Tyrone and Kerry. Mickey Hartes team were looking from 2 title in three seasons. But Jack O’Connor’s were the reigning champions and looking for back to back titles. Something had to give.

There will be no elite sport in the UK until at least June 1st. This sport will more than likely be behind closed doors with no spectators in attendance.

The UK government on Monday released a roadmap on what they intend to do over the coming weeks, in terms of what activities can be carried out. In regards to sport in the UK, this falls under step 2 in their road map. It states that sports can return on June 1st but must be behind closed. It says, “Permitting cultural and sporting events to take place behind closed-doors for broadcast, while avoiding the risk of large-scale social contact”.

The document states that cinemas and venues can re-open in step three, which is no earlier than July 4th. It states, “Some venues which are, by design, crowded and where it may prove difficult to enact distancing may still not be able to reopen safely at this point, or may be able to open safely only in part”. All of this information is available in the document entitled Our Plan to Rebuild: The UK Government’s Covid-19 Recovery Strategy’.

The document does state that the opening of venues, such as sports stadiums “will be only be fully possible significantly later depending on the reduction in numbers of infections”.

It looks certain now that the various organisations will hold meetings to discuss their next plans of action and when to get sports going from June onwards. Football has been out on the back burner in the UK for nearly two months now (March 13th). However, we reported  last month that the Premier league are looking to return to complete the 92 games in June.

Horse Racing in the UK could also return in June. Horse racing stopped in the UK on March 17th. The news came from the British Racing Authority twitter account where they tweeted,  “Industry leaders are meeting to discuss the available information and will issue an initial response later today”.

The first horse racing events which could possibly fall under the June opening of venues will be the 1000 guineas and 2000 guineas as Newmarket. Whether they will. Go ahead or not is another question. Obviously things will have to stop, ie the slow of the spread of the virus to allow this to happen. However, we are still looking at no sport until June 1st at the earliest.
