Liverpool 2-0 Burnley

Liverpool dispatched Burnley in their first home fixture of the 2021/22 season to maintain a 100% record after the first two games.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds were made to work for their result as Burnley looked dangerous in the final third but either could not find the finishing touch or were offside.

Liverpool left-back Kostas Tsimikas showed his quality with a Robertson-esque cross finding the head of centre-forward Diogo Jota, who headed home in front of the Kop.

Moments before, right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold and goalkeeper Alisson denied the visitors an unexpected lead with some stellar defensive work.

It was Burnley’s poor defending that allowed Jota the space to nod in the opener as centre-back Ben Mee moved away from Jota and left the goalscorer free in the middle of the box.

Liverpool were denied a second by VAR as midfielder Harvey Elliott, in his first Premier League start for the side, linked up with winger Mohamed Salah who curled the ball into the net.

Salah was deemed to be in an offside position and the goal was disallowed – this seemed to wake Burnley up.

Sean Dyche’s side pressed for an equaliser but went in at half-time without one to their name.

Striker Ashley Barnes put the ball into the home side’s net but his finish was ruled offside.

As time went on, Burnley’s pressure began to disintegrate and Liverpool gained the foothold in the match that they had searched for.

Sadio Mané secured the win for his side after Trent played the Senegalese forward in on goal.

The Liverpool full-backs were key to the side’s seventh win on the trot in the competition.

Liverpool will now look to next week’s game against Chelsea at Anfield before the first international break of the season.

The side return to action on Saturday, August 28th at 5:30 pm.

Republic of Ireland defender Andrew Omobamidele could miss out on selection for Norwich City in their clash against Liverpool due to a bout of tonsilitis.

The 19-year-old from Leixlip broke into the Norwich squad in the second half of last season as they won the EFL Championship in their first season after relegation from the Premier League.

His side host Liverpool at Carrow Road for the season opener with a capacity crowd expected to attend.

Head coach Daniel Farke said that the decision to include the uncapped Irish defender in the matchday squad or omit him will be made late.

The Kildare native made nine appearances for Farke’s side in the Championship in 2020/21, including eight-in-a-row at the end of the season.

The defender only failed to complete ninety minutes once in that span which saw him earn a place at the heart of the Norwich defence.

Omobamidele played in the Canaries’ final pre-season game against Newcastle United and was set to earn his first Premier League appearance this weekend against the 2019/20 champions.

Daniel Farke will also be without winger Przemyslaw Placheta and Sam Byram as well – the latter is recovering from a long-term injury.

Liverpool will be without Andy Robertson and Curtis Jones for the clash after he damaged ligaments in a pre-season clash with Athletic Bilbao at Anfield.

It is expected that the Greek full-back will step in for Robertson in competitive fixtures in his absence.

Tsimikas only made seven appearances for Liverpool in his debut season in England as a result of early-season injury problems and Robertson’s ever-presence in the squad.

However, the 25-year-old has had an impressive pre-season this summer and will look to carry over his form into the new season and get more appearances for the club that signed him last summer.

Norwich will host Liverpool in their Premier League season opener on Saturday, August 14th at 5:30 pm.

Liverpool FC midfielder Curtis Jones has been ruled out of his side’s Premier League opener against Norwich this weekend.

The 20-year-old suffered a concussion in the club’s final pre-season game against Osasuna on Monday.

Jones was taken off during the first half of the pre-season friendly against CA Osasuna following a collision.

Klopp told the club’s website: “He had a slight concussion so we just have to follow the protocol. He is fine, he feels fine again, but that’s the protocol.

“He is available for training from Sunday on I think.”

The Scouse prospect made four appearances in pre-season for Liverpool but may not have made the starting eleven against Norwich due to the depth the side has in midfield.

Andy Robertson has also been ruled out of Liverpool’s season opener at Carrow Road after sustaining ligament damage against Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.

Robertson was taken off at half-time after picking up an injury and was replaced by the great-nephew of Ian Rush, Owen Beck, for the second half.

The Scotsman landed awkwardly after making a block towards the end of the first half and stayed on the ground.

He was treated on the field before finishing the half and did not need a stretcher to leave the pitch, instead of being helped off by the physios.

Kostas Tsimikas took Robertson’s place for Liverpool’s final pre-season match against Osasuna on Monday night.

Klopp was able to report Liverpool have no other fresh injury concerns three days out from the beginning of the 2021-22 campaign.

“No, not from an injury point of view,” said the boss when asked for any new squad updates.

“But yeah, a few players had a shorter pre-season than others. No, all the others are healthy.”

Liverpool will kick off their season at 5:30 pm on Saturday, August 14th when they travel to Norwich.
