The GAA.ie Hurling Team of the Week for the past weekend of action on the inter-county level of the sport has been revealed.

Six sides are represented in this week’s edition of the GAA.ie Team of the Week.

Waterford and Cork lead the way with four selections each after their All-Ireland quarter-final wins over Tipperary and Dublin respectively.

Two Tipperary players make the side after their performances against Waterford but only one Dublin player joins them after the Cork game.

Two Offaly players appear in the side after the county’s fantastic performance against Derry in the Christy Ring Cup final.

The final spot is granted to Mayo after their fantastic Nickey Rackard Cup final victory over Tyrone.

Tipperary’s Cathal Barrett and Ronan Maher are given corner-back spots on the side for their displays against Liam Cahill’s Waterford.

Barrett has excelled to become one of the game’s top man markers and showed his quality in a tough game for the side’s defence by keeping Patrick Curran in his pocket.

Ronan Maher played a more attacking role than his teammate and was wing-back, despite the number on his shirt and his placement in the GAA.ie Team of the Week.

Maher scored 0-3 from play to help the Premier County fight for the win until the final whistle, even after a controversial penalty.

Waterford’s Jamie Barron ran the show for the opposition in Páirc Uí Chaoimh at the weekend to take them beyond Tipperary and, ultimately, save their season after an early exit from the Munster Senior Hurling Championship.

The midfielder dictated play when his side was in possession and added 0-4 of his own from long range.

His tenacity and never-say-die attitude off-the-ball was integral to Waterford’s impressive victory too.

Offaly’s Oisin Kelly as the sole representative from the Christy Ring Cup as his performance helped his county to their first third-tier hurling title and promotion to the 2022 Joe McDonagh Cup.

Oisin Kelly’s seven points and presence in the forward lines was devastating to the Derry defence, who failed to keep him locked up.

His performance secured second-tier hurling for his side, which looks nice alongside their Division One status.

All-Ireland Hurling Championship quarter-final – Tipperary v Waterford – 1:30 pm – RTÉ

Tipperary will face-off against Munster rivals Waterford in Cork at Pairc Uí Chaoimh on Saturday, July 31st at 1:30 pm in the first All-Ireland Hurling Championship quarter-final live on RTÉ.

This tie is set to be an exciting bout between two of hurlings most iconic counties.

Now, Tipperary v Waterford will be the first Hurling quarter-final of the 2021 season.

The two sides have a combined total of 30 senior All-Irelands between them, Tipperary (28) to Waterford’s (2).

Waterford has not won the Liam McCarthy cup since 1959, which saw them defeat Kilkenny in a replay with a scoreline of 3-12 (21) to 1-10 (13).

Comparing that to Tipperary, whose last All-Ireland triumph was in 2019, also against Kilkenny with the scoreline 0-20 (20) to 3-25 (34).

Both sides had a mixed campaign in the Munster championship, with Waterford being eliminated in the quarter-final to Clare in June.

Clare went onto face Tipperary in the semi-finals, losing by four points in an all-time classic with a scoreline of 3-23 (32) to 2-22 (28).

In the Munster final, All-Ireland favourites Limerick overcame Cork by 5-points in yet another classic.

In July, both sides qualified for the All-Ireland quarter-finals after making it through the Qualifiers.

Galway was shockingly thrown out of the championship by Waterford in Thurles.

While Cork beat Clare by 2-points in a back and forth game.

The winner of this game will meet the most successful team in hurling history, 36-time All-Ireland champions Kilkenny in the semi-final.

Conclusion

It is a very difficult game to call for many fans and pundits, but given how much better Tipperary are in almost every position.

A better bench to call upon, more experience in the crunch games of the championship season and a higher expectancy.

Tipp should come out with the spoils.

Prediction: Tipperary by 7 points

The match will throw in at 14:00 on Saturday, 24th July in the Semple Stadium, Tipperary. Sky Sport Arena will also be televising the match for those who are stuck at home.

Waterford reached this point after losing to a Tony Kelly inspired Clare, they since narrowly knocked out Laois in round one to put them back on form.

Other the other side of the coin, Galway found themselves in the qualifiers after being stunned in a four-point defeat to Dublin.

This match could prove to be a battle between two current county legends, Austin Gleeson and Joe Canning. It will be interesting to see who has the greater attacking threat for their side and who can be nullified.

These two last faced each other in the Hurling League in early June. Galway won the tie scoring 4-28 to Waterford’s 3-23; let’s hope this game is just as exciting.

Starting 15

Waterford
Shaun O’Brien; Conor Gleeson, Conor Prunty, Ian Kenny; Calum Lyons, Shane Bennett, Kieran Bennett; Jamie Barron, Peter Hogan; Jack Fagan, Jack Prendergast, Stephen Bennett; Dessie Hutchinson, Austin Gleeson, Patrick Curran.

Subs: Billy Nolan, Shane McNulty, Darragh Lyons, Billy Power, Shane Fives, Michael Kiely, Neil Montgomery, Jake Dillon, Colin Dunford, Kevin Moran, Mikey Kearney

Subs: Mark Fahy, Jack Fitzpatrick, TJ Brennan, Adrian Tuohy, Fintan Burke, David Burke, Johnny Coen, Niall Burke, Evan Niland, Jason Flynn, Kevin Cooney.

Betting

Galway are the bookies’ favourites with odds of 4/9.

A draw has odds of 10/1.

Waterford are still given a good chance by the bookmakers with odds of 2/1 to win.

Predicted Score

After their shock in the Leinster championship, expect Galway to come out and prove a point. They won’t be as lazy and lack lustre, they will want to win.

This still young Waterford side has shown their quality but it will be hard to see them dealing with the Tribesmen firing on all cylinders.

Expect to see Galway having the cutting edge to win this game by three or more scores.

CLICK HERE FOR LIVE SCORES ON WATERFORD V CORK

The match will throw in at 19:30 on Wednesday, 21st July in the Fraher Field, Waterford.

This will be the first game of the football championship for both teams, they will want to leave a mark that sets their years off on a high point.

Cork are undoubtedly the favourites in this tie, having produced an All Ireland championship winning team as recently as 2019.

Although, Waterford have now shown their attitude to underage football after beating Clare in the U20 quarterfinal and narrowly losing to Tipperary in the semi-final.

Midfielder Sean Flavin will be one to watch for Waterford. The Colligan man is full of fitness and will keep running until the last whistle.

Cork’s attack will rely heavily on McSweeney and O’Shaughnessy in midfield to pull the strings and to create chances.

The winner of this game will face Kerry in the semi Final next weekend in Páirc Uí Chaoimh.

Minor Starting 15

Waterford

Cork (Munster minor team): Mikey O’Connell; Dan Twomey, Shane O’Connell, Patrick O’Grady; Sam Copps, Conor Twomey, Darragh O’Brien; Michael McSweeney, Rory O’Shaughnessy; Jack O’Neill, Niall Kelly, Colm Gillespie; Ross Corkery, Jamie O’Driscoll, Hugh O’Connor.

Subs: Daniel Walsh, Fionn Crowley, Mark Hunt, Conor Cusack, Dylan Crowley, Jack Cunningham, Luke O’Herlihy, Niall Daly, Olan Corcoran.

Predicted Score

Even though Waterford might have hunger and confidence, it is hard to see them overcoming this giant in Munster football.

Cork will have the pressure of being the favourites but expect them to deal with it well and win comfortably by more than seven points.

Round Two of the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Qualifiers will see Clare take on Cork and Waterford play Galway on Saturday, July 24th.

Following the hurling action at the weekend, the draw was made, which saw Kilkenny and Limerick win the Leinster and Munster provincial titles respectively.

All sides involved in the draw were knocked out of their provincial championships at the quarter-final and semi-final stages.

The draw took place on RTÉ Radio 1’s Morning Ireland.

Two of the sides were in action at the weekend in the first round of the qualifiers, with Cork and Galway starting their journey through the backdoor in round two after losses to eventual Munster champions Limerick and Dublin – the pair were awarded a bye for round one.

Brian Lohan’s Clare progressed to the second round after beating Wexford in a match-up against rival Bainisteoir Davy Fitzgerald at Semple Stadium.

Clare’s squad showed their worth and the Banner had another game in recent history that did not showcase an overreliance on the Championship’s top scorer Tony Kelly.

Cathal Malone, David Reidy, Ryan Taylor and Aidan McCarthy all chipped in with scores throughout the game and Clare’s bench also provided 1-02 for the side.

They will face a Cork side who have been inconsistent in 2021, and with five wins from their last six games, Brian Lohan’s men will be confident of progression.

Waterford earned a date with Galway and a repeat of the 2017 All-Ireland final after a five-point win over preliminary round winners Laois.

Waterford’s fortunes have been up-and-down this season with Liam Cahill and his players struggling to get the side back into the vein of form that saw them reach the All-Ireland final last year.

Galway will play their first game after a shock loss to Mattie Kenny’s Dublin hurlers and will want to bounce back from their defeat.

The Déise will have to be on their A-game to earn a date in the All-Ireland quarter-finals with either Dublin or Tipperary.

Throw in for this match will be at 19:30 on Thursday, 15th July in …

Tipperary made it to the semifinals after banishing their curse of losing to Limerick. The South Tipp heavy side beat them by three-point with their fast inside forward line making the difference.

Clonmel’s Sean O’Connor is their star player along with Kehoe as the full forwards. Eleven of the team’s 16 points came from these two players.

Waterford showed their tenacity for goal scoring after beating Clare in the quarterfinal, scoring 4-05 in the game.

Full forward Tom O’Connell got a hattrick and a point that day dancing past the Clare defense. He should prove to be a handful for Tipperary on Thursday.

Predicted Starting 15

Tipperary

Scully (GK); S. Daly, T. Condon, B. McKeown; E. Butler, B. O’Connor, L. Kennedy; C. Deeley, K. Grogan; C. Cadell, R. Walsh, J. Holloway; M. O’Connor, B. Kehoe, S. O’Connor.

Betting

Tipperary 1/6

Draw 12/1

Waterford 9/2

Score Prediction

Tipperary are slight favorites for this tie, but Waterford will hope their shock win over Clare was not a flash in the pan. This game will be tense and close.

The Premier County will have the advantage here and Tipperary will win this game by around two points.

All-Ireland SHC Qualifiers Round 1 – Laois v Waterford – UMPC Nowlan Park – 2:00 pm – GAAGO

CLICK HERE FOR LIVE SCORE COMMENTARY ON LAOIS V WATERFORD

Laois and Waterford will go head to head in Round 1 of the All-Ireland Championship Qualifiers at the UMPC Nowlan Park in Kilkenny in the second championship Qualifier live on GAAGO.

Waterford had a successful league campaign, finishing second from Division 1 Group A, only behind Galway.

Their opponents, Laois endured a drastically different league run compared to Waterford, finishing bottom on their Division 1 Group B, playing 5 and losing 5. Having a points difference of -54 in the process.

In the two sides last game, Laois were played off the park in the Leinster quarter-final loss to Wexford, losing 5-31 to 1-23 in a 20-point margin.

Waterford on the other hand, came up just short against Clare in the Munster quarter-final tie, losing 1-22 to 0-21 in a 4 point winning margin.

The winner of this game will end up facing Galway in round 2 of the qualifiers on the 24th of July.

Conclusion

Coming into this game, there is only one team I consider favourites to progress further in the championship and that is Waterford.

Not a bad team by any stretch of the imagination, but they will be facing a rather poor Laois side, who were awful during the league and looked out of their depth against Wexford.

Losing against Clare by 4 points is not an embarrassment, and they should make a statement by dismantling Laois by some margin.

They will then go on to face off against Galway, who before their shock loss to Dublin, were favourites for the Leinster title.

Prediction: Waterford by 12 points

Limerick will host Waterford in Limerick in the first of two Munster Quarter-Finals to be played on Saturday afternoon.

Billy Lee has led Limerick to an impressive league campaign, improving the squad as a whole, playing stylish football with the limited talent at his disposal.

Waterford was hot and cold throughout their league campaign, losing out to Antrim in the Division 4 semi-final to Antrim last time out.

Limerick will be expected to breeze past this Waterford squad, but come championship season, tails will be up and anything can happen.

We had a preview of this year’s Hurling Championship Finale in mid-November as Limerick overcame a stern test from Waterford to win the Munster final. Now, Waterford have a second bite at the cherry on the biggest stage of all after a heroic semi-final win over Kilkenny. But, the challenge Waterford posed in that Munster showdown means John Kiely will be sure not to underestimate his opposition. Limerick have been the team to beat in this year’s Championship but Waterford have already caused more than one upset. Limerick vs Waterford takes place at 15:30 on Sunday.

The Déise men opened their campaign against Cork and recorded a four-point win to set up a Munster final against Limerick. Four points was again the difference between the teams but this time Waterford came out on the losing side. However, Liam Cahill’s side left that game with the knowledge that they could compete with the best. They brought a ferocious intensity and went toe-to-toe with Limerick’s physicality in midfield.

In the 51st minute of that game Waterford were ahead. Then, Limerick’s strength in depth proved to be crucial. Kiely introduced reinforcements and his big guns on the pitch raised their game accordingly. Kieran Bennett was assigned to Cian Lynch for that game and Callum Lyons stuck to Gearóid Hegarty like glue. Still, these two Limerick leaders hit four points between them. It will be interesting to see how Cahill deploys his man-markers this time around. He will likely stick with what proved successful in the Munster final. However, there is no room for error with the stakes so high.

Following their Munster final defeat, Waterford beat Clare to set up a semi-final against Kilkenny. That game against the Cats resulted on one of the most entertaining games of Hurling to grace the Championship in what was already an action-packed year. As a result, Waterford carry the momentum into this final.

Special Limerick Team

In contrast, Limerick’s journey to the final yielded less drama and close-calls. Entering the Championship as favourites, their performances have justified this title. After conquering Munster, John Kiely’s troops beat Galway in the semi-final with three points to spare. The showing was a great example of how Limerick have the necessary tools to overcome whatever challenge is thrown at them.

In that semi-final, Limerick quickly fell five-points behind the Galwegians. Despite managing to come back without any sense of desperation, Kiely will be keen to ensure his side hit the ground running in the final.

Limerick’s physicality and intensity in the middle-third has been the source of much of their praise this year. However, their efficiency in front of goal has been their most valuable attribute.

As much as Liam Cahill will be focusing on the midfield battle, he must set-up his team to try and neutralise an incredibly economical Limerick attack. After failing to live up to expectations last year, Limerick are aiming to claim their second Liam McCarthy in three years.

Meanwhile, Waterford haven’t had an All-Ireland win since 1959. But, the loss of 2017 will be fresh in many minds and they’ll be keen end their drought.

Limerick vs Waterford is on RTÉ and Sky Sports Mix.

Limerick are 2/5 favourites with Paddy Power. On the other hand, Waterford are 5/2 and a draw is 10/1.

Prediction: Limerick.

After consecutive seasons of failing to emerge from Munster, Waterford have emerged as the surprise package in this year’s Championship. Now, Liam Cahill’s men are just one game away from competing in the final again. The last time the Liam McCarthy Cup went back to Waterford was 1959. On the other hand, Kilkenny were this year’s Leinster Champions after fighting off a strong Galway team in the final. Brian Cody’s side were the Championship runners-up in 2019. This year, he has an opportunity to go one better, but there is still a lot of work for the Cats to do.

Waterford overcame Clare in last weekend’s quarter-final by a healthy nine points. After an opening half of breathtaking hurling, Waterford were just three points ahead thanks to Jack Fagan’s goal just before the interval. That was their third major after Dessie Hutchinson had already netted two in a scintillating individual performance. Equally as important, Waterford were successful in quenching the flaming hot Tony Kelly who hit two from play despite injuring his ankle before the game.

After the break, Waterford’s squad depth proved instrumental as Cahill put faith in his subs to finish the job. Clare managed to go point-for-point with Waterford during the third quarter but never came within the three-point deficit. Then, when Waterford went seven ahead on 55 minutes, Clare responded with a goal. The Déise ship held firm however. The introduction of the Waterford reserves yielded no fewer than five scores. By full-time, Cahill had steered his team to a well-deserved victory.

Previously, Kilkenny qualified for the semi-final by beating Galway in the Leister Final. Before the game, Galway were widely tipped to advance after their commanding win over Wexford. In fact, for much of the Leinster final it looked as if the tipsters were going to be proved correct. By the 55th minute, the Galwegians were five up and going from strength to strength. Then lightning struck twice in 40 seconds as the Cats goaled twice for a six-point swing. Firstly, Richie Hogan lit up the Dark Dublin sky with one of the most skillful goals scored on a Hurling pitch. Then, from the very next play, the same man set up TJ Reid who buried it into the Galway net. From there, Kilkenny were on top and Galway never recovered.

That was Brian Cody’s 16th Leinster title but he hasn’t won an All-Ireland since 2015. Last year, they finished runners-up to Tipperary but were demolished in the final. After a sluggish start against Dubin this year, Cody’s experience has proved influential in this Kilkenny team’s improvement. There is no doubt he has his eyes firmly set on the final. But, Waterford will make him earn a place in the showdown.

Waterford’s win over Clare was a tremendous way to bounce back from defeat in the Munster final a week earlier. They have gone from strength to strength themselves this year and will be ready to take on the Kilkenny challenge on Saturday evening. The excitement of an All-Ireland semi-final is sure to quench the fatigue of three games in three weeks.

Regardless of how both sides enter this game, it is sure to be a fascinating watch. There has already been a lot of surprises this year and no one will rule out another.

The game is live on RTÉ as well as Sky Sports Mix.

Paddy Power are fancying Kilkenny to go through. The Leinster men are 4/6. In contrast, Waterford as 13/8 and a draw is 9/1.

Prediction: Kilkenny.
