Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has vowed that his side “will be back” after their fourth-round exit from this year’s Carabao Cup.

The holders were beaten 5-3 on penalties by West Ham United after an inspired Alphonse Areola kept them at bay.

Phil Foden and missed their penalties, which allowed Said Benrahma to score the winning spot kick and take David Moyes’ men into the next round.

The loss means that City’s five-year run without a defeat in the competition, as well as their streak of four Carabao Cups in a row, has come to an end.

“An incredible run has finished [but] we finished in a good way,” said the City boss.

“We played in a really good way, creating chances against a team who defended deep.

“On penalties, they were better. Congratulations to West Ham. Next year we will be back.”

City have dominated the competition under Pep Guardiola, beating Arsenal, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur on the way to each other four they have picked up under the Catalan coach.

Their last loss in the competition came in the 2016-17 season when they were narrowly beaten by rivals and eventual victors Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The Citizens have been lauded for their squad depth throughout their period of dominance in the League Cup as the side have several great players at their disposal in each position.

Their period of dominance led to them joining Liverpool as the record holders of the League Cup with eight each.

Guardiola praised West Ham’s performance in the game and said that they brought out a good performance from his side in return.

“Not just this season, the previous one [too],” Guardiola said of West Ham’s progress under Moyes.

“One of the toughest games we played at home when one side was better than us last season was West Ham.

“They’re doing well in the Premier League and the Europa League and now they are in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

“Fantastic team, fantastic manager. We knew it. We did our game. I didn’t see the stats, but I thought we did a good game.

“Sometimes it happens. Next season we will be back.”

Southampton v West Ham United – Preview, Lineups, Betting, TV Coverage

Southampton will face off against West Ham United at Saint Mary’s on the Gameweek 4 of the 2021/2022 Premier League season.

This game will be an interesting game for both teams. The last time these two sides met was in the last game of last season tie at the London Stadium where David Moyes’s side came out 3-0 victors. West Ham also took 4 points from 6 from Southampton in the 2020/2021 season.

Southampton Retrospective

The Saints are slowly coming into some form after a second draw Newcastle United.

Coming from behind twice to take a point, with James Ward-Prowse scoring from the penalty spot in injury time.

Notching up 2 points from 9 is relegation form but if getting a win here, it will give them confidence for the month of September.

West Ham United Retrospective

The Hammers enjoyed a surprisingly successful 2020/2021 season, finishing sixth, only missing out on Champions League football by 2 points.

This season so far, they have carried on last season’s fine form into their first two fixtures of the current season.

Beating Newcastle away from home 2-4 and on Monday night, hammering European hopefuls Leicester City 4-1 at home to go top of the Premier League with two wins from two.

In their last outing, West Ham came back from behind to salvage a 2-2 draw at home to Crystal Palace.

In form, Michail Antonio continued to notch up his stats with a goal and an assist, contributing to 7 goals in 3 games.

Date, kick-off time and venue

This game between Southampton and West Ham United will kick off at 3 pm BST (British Summer Time) on Saturday, September 11, 2021, at Saint Mary’s.

Where to watch West Ham United v Crystal Palace.

The game will not be televised live on any UK channel.

West Ham United v Crystal Palace team news

Winston Reid and Arthur Masuaku are major doubts for this game, with but sustaining knee injuries in recent weeks.

For Palace, Michael Olise is reportedly out until mid-September with a lower back injury.

While Eberechi Eze is suffering from lower leg problems and will be ruled out for the foreseeable future with no confirmation on his return.

Southampton v West Ham United prediction

Given the form of both teams, Southampton should lose this game sparingly. But, football is a crazy sport and sometimes the favourites don’t always win.

Southampton is in need of a win, a victory here would kick-start their season and stop the talk of relegation.

West Ham, on the other hand, will know what they have to do. Looking shaky at times against Crystal Palace, they managed to salvage a point after Conor Gallagher put Palace in front.

While I do think Southampton will cause problems, I can only see a West Ham win here.

Prediction: West Ham United 1-3

Leicester City travel to the London Stadium to take on West Ham in their first away game of the season on Monday night.

Brendan Rodgers’ side will be looking for their second win in as many games after a 1-0 opening weekend victory over Bruno Lage’s Wolves.

Jamie Vardy was the goalscorer at the King Power and will be available to lead the line for the Foxes again.

However, defender Jannik Vestergaard, who joined the club from Southampton 11 days ago and made his debut against Wolves, will not be available for selection after picking up an injury in training.

This leaves Caglar Soyuncu as the only recognised senior centre-back at the club that is fit for their second Premier League game.

Jonny Evans and Wesley Fofana are also currently recovering from injuries they had picked up before the 2021/22 season started.

Ryan Bertrand is also unavailable as he recovers from Covid-19 but full-back Timothy Castagne is set to make his return to the side after suffering an eye socket injury at Euro 2020.

However, Luke Thomas will play in place of Bertrand on the left side of the defence.

West Ham got off to an impressive start last week with a four-goal showing at St James Park.

Michail Antonio got on the scoresheet in the side’s opening fixture and has scored in his last two Premier League starts against Leicester.

The Londoner is one goal off becoming the outright top scorer for the Hammers in the competition – he is tied with Paolo Di Canio on 47.

Wing-back Arthur Masuaku is still recovering from the knee injury he picked up last season and will not be available for West Ham’s first home match of the season.

Lineups

West Ham United: Fabianski; Coufal, Dawson, Ogbonna, Cresswell; Rice, Soucek; Bowen, Benrahma, Fornals; Antonio.

Replacements: Yarmolenko, Lanzini, Areola, Noble, Diop, Fredericks, Johnson, Coventry, Baptiste.

Leicester City: Schmeichel; Pereira, Amartey, Soyuncu, Thomas; Tielemans, Ndidi; Perez, Maddison, Barnes; Vardy.

Replacements: Albrighton, Ward, Iheanacho, Choudhury, Dewsbury-Hall, Praet, Castagne, Daka, Soumare.

Odds

West Ham United 7/5

Draw 12/5

Leicester City 9/5

TV Coverage

West Ham United v Leicester City will be shown live on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League. Kick-off is at 8 pm with coverage starting an hour earlier at 7 pm.

The 20-year-old was promoted from the u21s after a number of players pulled out of the squad.

West Ham u23 captain Conor Coventry has received his first senior international call-up to the Republic of Ireland squad.

The midfielder was previously announced as a member of Jim Crawford’s u21 squad but has been promoted to the seniors after a succession of players were ruled out due to injury.

Coventry has very little experience playing senior football, he only ever played league football whilst on a brief stint with Lincoln City in League One last year where he managed 7 appearances. Otherwise, he’s been restricted to a handful of cup appearances for West Ham.

Despite his lack of experience, though, Coventry has undeniable quality. He’s currently captain of West Ham’s u23s and has appeared a number of times for Ireland’s u21s where he’s established himself as a consistent performer. He has also featured on the West Ham bench – alongside fellow Ireland international Mipo Odubeko – a handful of times in recent weeks which is no mean feat given their impressive league form.

Although Coventry is unlikely to make an appearance in the World Cup qualifiers, there’s a good chance he could be involved in the friendly against Qatar later this month. If so, it’d be a massive achievement given his relatively low amount of game time. He may take inspiration from Lee O’Connor who received his solitary cap – so far – in 2019 having never made a senior league appearance.

Blackburn Rovers captain Darragh Lenihan was also called up within the last couple of days due to injury problems within the squad.

Caoimhin Kelleher, Kevin Long, Conor Hourihane and Callum O’Dowda were forced to withdraw from the squad, adding to an already long list of injuries.

Kelleher was poised to start against Serbia on Wednesday, however it now appears that Bournemouth ‘keeper Mark Travers will take his place. Stephen Kenny suggested that Travers would start in the absence of Kelleher during a Q&A last week.

The Republic of Ireland squad travel to Belgrade on Wednesday (March 24th) to take on Serbia before meeting Luxembourg in the more familiar venue of the Aviva Stadium on Saturday (March 27th). Their final trip takes them to Nagyerdei Stadion in Hungary on the following Tuesday (March 30th) where they’ll face World Cup 2022 hosts Qatar in a friendly.

Manchester United looked to put their midweek disappointment aside this evening with a victory against West Ham. They done exactly that; however it wasn’t as straightforward as they would have wished. They ran out 3-1 winners on a night that could have ended very different.

Manchester United move up to 4th in the Premier League table, having been in 10th up until the 65th minute. West Ham, on the other hand, slip down to 7th.

West Ham opened the scoring through Tomáš Souček in the 38th minute. The Czech Republic international turned poacher as he tapped in from a Declan Rice header. In truth, it was no more than they deserved having dominated much of the first half.

Manchester United talisman Bruno Fernandes could do nothing but watch from the bench in the first half. The Portuguese midfielder suffered a foot injury prior to the match, meaning he wasn’t in suitable condition to start the match.

He did, however, come on in place of Donny van de Beek for the second half with his side trailing 1-0. Edinson Cavani also made way for Marcus Rashford. The aging striker was unable to have the same affect as he did last weekend, leading to his substitution.

Paul Pogba failed to get going in the first half, leading to criticism on social media. He answered his critics in the 65th minute with an accurate strike from well outside the box. The goal was Pogba’s first of the Premier League season in what has been a largely disappointing one for the Frenchman so far.

They completed their comeback just minutes later. This time it was Mason Greenwood who got in on the action. Alex Telles crossed the ball into Greenwood’s feet who took a touch away from the defender before finishing coolly into the bottom corner.

They completed their rout in the 78th minute as Marcus Rashford chipped past Fabianski after receiving a through ball from Juan Mata. He missed a golden opportunity to make it 3-1 just minutes earlier but he made no mistake this time around.

The match finished 3-1 to United after a superb comeback which showed character that had been missing for large periods of the match. The scoreline was perhaps harsh on West Ham, having completely dominated the first half.

All eyes will now be on United’s Champions League fixture against Leipzig on Tuesday. A win for the Red Devils in that fixture would ensure qualification for the knockout stages.
