All-Ireland champions Limerick have a full set of 15 players included as nine different counties are represented in the hurling nominations for the 2021 PwC All-Stars announced today (Thursday).

After a summer that saw the Treaty County sweep all before them to retain the Liam MacCarthy Cup, John Kiely’s outstanding champions bring that dominance to the final list of 45 nominations.

Also announced today are the players who have been shortlisted for the PwC GAA/GPA Hurler of the Year Award with Limerick again setting the standard.

Seán Finn, Kyle Hayes and Cian Lynch will be voted on by their peers for the overall award.

The vote for the PwC GAA/GPA Young Hurler of the Year Award will be contested between Kilkenny’s Eoin Cody, Cork’s Shane Barrett and Clare’s Aidan McCarthy.

Nickie Quaid, Eoin Murphy and Patrick Collins form a high calibre trio contesting the goalkeeping award.

In defence, the 18 nominees are from Limerick, Cork, Waterford, Kilkenny, Tipperary and Clare.

The six midfield nominees include the high scoring Laois player Paddy Purcell. Dublin wing forward and captain Danny Sutcliffe and Wexford captain Lee Chin are their counties sole representatives in a star-studded list of 18 attackers who will be cut to six for the final 15.

The full county breakdown for the hurling nominations is Limerick 15, Cork nine, Waterford seven, Kilkenny five, three each for Clare and Tipperary and one each for Dublin, Laois and Wexford.

Congratulating the nominees, Uachtarán CLG Larry McCarthy said: “I want to congratulate all of those who have been chosen among this distinguished list of nominees for the PwC All-Stars.

“To be recognised and shortlisted as being among the cream of the crop from what was yet another thrilling hurling summer is a significant achievement for all the players, and is shared by their families, clubs and the communities they represent.

“I also congratulate the contenders announced for the PwC Hurler of the Year and the PwC Young Hurler of the Year.

“Since 1971 the All-Stars has been synonymous with excellence. Our thanks to PwC for their continuing support of this wonderful scheme.”

Feargal O’Rourke, Managing Partner, PwC, said: “For the last 50 years the All-Star Awards have marked competitiveness and success on the pitch, but also preparation, bravery and sacrifice away from it.

“On behalf of everyone at PwC, sincere congratulations to each of the 45 hurlers nominated for the 2021 PwC All-Stars.

“Despite the ongoing challenges in 2021, their outstanding individual performances throughout the season have entertained and captivated us all.

“These nominations recognise their outstanding dedication and are hugely deserved.”

Tom Parsons, Chief Executive of the GPA, said: “To be nominated for a PwC All-Star is special and congratulations to the 45 players who have had their individual performances recognised by the selection committee to whom I also want to say thanks.

“Heartiest congratulations too, to the nominees for the PwC Hurler of the Year and the PwC Young Hurler of the Year.

“To be on those shortlists given the many outstanding performances in 2021 is a great achievement in itself.

“I also want to take the time to recognise all inter-county players, male and female, who provided us with much-needed entertainment against the backdrop of the pandemic this year.

“What you have done for the morale of the country should not be underestimated.  Thank you.”

The nominations were chosen by a panel of Gaelic Games correspondents from across, print, radio, TV and digital media, chaired by Uachtarán CLG Larry McCarthy.

The PwC All-Star nominations in football will be released tomorrow.  The presentation of the PwC All-Star awards will take place on December 10 in a televised ceremony that will be in line with Covid-19 restrictions and will be confirmed in due course.

Willie Maher is now considered as the leading contender to succeed Liam Sheedy as manager of the Tipperary senior hurlers, according to the Irish Examiner.

Maher guided the county minors to an All-Ireland title in 2012 and was manager of the U21 side from 2015 to 2017 but the latter tenure yielded no reward at provincial or All-Ireland level.

Maher was also a selector at Waterford under Derek McGrath in his first season and managed Cuala to two senior Dublin titles in 2019 and 2020.

He is currently part of the Bennettsbridge backroom in Kilkenny – the side produced a shock win over Ballyhale Shamrocks at the weekend.

The 42-year-old was linked with the senior job before Liam Sheedy returned for his second term as boss in 2018.

Sheedy won the All-Ireland in the first season of his second term with the side but two quarter-final exits in the next two years have left a lot to be desired.

Recently, Wexford GAA announced that they had hired Darragh Egan as their new senior hurling manager.

Egan is a former Tipperary hurler and was a selector at Tipperary under Liam Sheedy in his second stint with the Premier County.

The 35-year-old has also coached the Tipperary under-16 hurlers, a job he held previous to his role as a selector.

Egan stepped away from his role with Tipperary when Liam Sheedy brought an end to his second tenure in charge of the 28-time All-Ireland champions.

The new Wexford coach has also won two All-Ireland titles as a player on the Tipperary and brings the 11 years of experience he has as a player to the Model County.

Egan’s role with his club Kildangan GAA has seen the side rise from the junior championship to become the county’s senior champions last year.

If the appointment of Egan by Wexford is anything to go by, success matters for an inter-county hire – Maher has experience with success.

Wexford GAA have appointed former Tipperary coach Darragh Egan as their new senior hurling manager.

The 35-year-old will replace Davy Fitzgerald in the role after the former Clare hurler left the job in July.

The appointment is on a two-year basis, with an option of a further year included.

Egan was a selector in Liam Sheedy’s backroom staff and was part of the coaching setup that won the All-Ireland with the Premier County in 2019.

The 35-year-old has also coached the Tipperary under-16 hurlers, a job he held previous to his role as selector.

Egan stepped away from his role with Tipperary when Liam Sheedy brought an end to his second tenure in charge of the 28-time All-Ireland champions.

Egan’s role with his club Kildangan GAA has seen the side rise from the junior championship to become the county’s senior champions last year.

Wexford GAA Chairperson, Michaél Martin, in welcoming Darragh to the Wexford GAA fold, said:

“Our strategic plan, “Ar Aghaidh Linn le Chéile”, is the most ambitious plan ever launched in the history of Wexford GAA with clear and specific goals for on and off the pitch. We are conscious that the performance of our senior hurling team is a key element in the social wellbeing of our county.

Darragh Egan is a sharp, enthusiastic and energetic leader who understands performance at an elite level. He is process-driven and has a hunger for success. He has experience of leading in a high-performance environment and I have no doubt that he will bring a wealth of knowledge to Wexford hurling as we aim to take the next step on the journey to success.”

Wicklow and Wexford will meet in round one of the Leinster Senior Football Championship for the second year in a row.

The game will be available to watch on GAAGO and will kick off at 3 pm on Sunday.

The fixture last year saw Wicklow beat the Model County’s footballers by four points, scoring two goals during the 70 minutes.

The winner of this instalment will face Leinster and All-Ireland holders Dublin.

Since then, Wicklow was knocked out of the 2020 championship and both sides had a league campaign.

Both sides finished the league on a high after losing their initial games, with Wexford getting the added bonus of silverware – the Division Four Shield.

Wicklow managed an average of 1.5 goals per game in their 2021 National Football League Division Three campaign.

Their attack is not as potent as that stat may suggest but the quality of Seanie Furlong and Eoin Darcy should not be underestimated.

The two attackers have impressed under Davy Byrne and will threaten the Wexford backline often.

Their surprise win over Cavan kept the side in Division Three for 2022 and the performance of Patrick O’Connor against the reigning Ulster champions is a promising sign for the future.

The Wicklow attack will face a Wexford defence that has looked porous in 2021.

The Model men’s backline allowed Carlow back into a game they should have lost and put the game out of reach for their attack at home to Waterford.

The games were filled with cards that handicapped all three sides involved in the two games.

Specifically, Wexford goalkeeper Darragh Brooke was black-carded 37 minutes into the Waterford game.

Regardless, their defence was susceptible to counter-attacks in that same match and will have a tougher time against Davy Byrne’s Wicklow.

However, in turn, their attack has the quality to threaten Wicklow’s defence and bring the game to them that way.

Mark Rossiter, Tom Byrne and Robbie Brooks looked lively in the side’s league games.

John Tubritt racked up six points in their Division Four Shield win over Sligo.

Four goals in their last two games have added a positive twist to the season that goes well with the Shield.

However, if they are to take down Wicklow, their defence will need to lock the Wicklow forwards down.

The quality of Furlong and co. may be too much for the Model county.

The 2021 Leinster Senior Football Championship will begin on June 27 with three games in Round One.

These three games will bring the number of teams in the provincial championship down from 11 to eight.

Kilkenny does not field a team for Gaelic football.

You can view the full draw here.

Leinster Round One

Offaly v Louth

Division Two-bound Offaly will play Mickey Harte’s Louth in Navan.

Both sides have been promoted in the National Football League this season and will want to carry that momentum over to the championship.

Offaly took the top spot in Division Three South after three wins from three and dispatched Fermanagh to win promotion.

They have not yet played the Division Three final against Derry, at the time of writing.

However, John Maughan’s side did not make it easy for themselves.

Fortunately, veteran Niall McNamee took on the role of super-sub as he got Offaly over the line on multiple occasions.

Louth, on the other hand, has improved vastly under Mickey Harte.

A dramatic one-point loss to Antrim in the first round of the National Football League was the only blemish on an otherwise stellar record.

Second-halves become clinics for the Wee County as they cruised to three wins in a row to earn promotion.

Led by captain Sam Mulroy, Louth put on fantastic displays to distance themselves from the competition and take control of proceedings.

Offaly may be the higher-ranked side but an upset is not unlikely.

Prediction: Louth by 3

Wicklow v Wexford

Wicklow and Wexford will go head-to-head in Aughrim in the first round.

Wicklow masterminded the great escape in their relegation play-off against Cavan.

Their 3-11 (20) to 0-18 (18) win over the Ulster champions was their first of the season after a brutal campaign as the whipping boys in Division Three South.

Seanie Furlong’s 2-3 was instrumental in the shock win for Davy Byrne’s side.

Wexford had a similarly underwhelming National Football League campaign.

However, their two losses to Carlow and Waterford in Division Four South were much closer games.

Furthermore, the side showed their quality in the Division Four Shield final against Sligo.

John Turbitt hit six points over the bar while Ben Brosnan and Liam Coleman found the net for the Model County.

Their scoring ability will be important in a clash such as this.

Shane Roche could lead Wexford to their first win in the Leinster Senior Football Championship since 2014.

Prediction: Wexford by 1

Carlow v Longford

Carlow and Longford contest the final first-round fixture of the 2021 Leinster Senior Football Championship.

Carlow will want to bounce back after missing out on promotion to Division Three after Louth beat them by eight points.

The Dolman County made it look easy against Waterford and edged Wexford in the South section of Division Four but could not make it count.

However, 61 points from three games is an impressive haul, as well as six goals in the same period.

A stunning comeback against Wexford is the highlight of their season so far.

The Fighting Cock County will look to go one further.

Longford enters the championship side of the season after surviving relegation to Division Four on the last day.

A humiliating defeat at the hand of Rory Gallagher’s resurgent Derry started the year off on a low point.

But a final day with Fermanagh gave the side hope as they almost left Brewster Park with a win in front of spectators.

Longford then brought their A-game to Pearse Park where they dominated Munster champions Tipperary to maintain their Division Three status.

The most impressive part of the win was their solidity at the back as they shut down the Tipperary forwards.

It will be a close game between Carlow and Longford but it could be an entertaining one.

Prediction: Longford by 3
